Research Paper Compared to Argumentative Papers

        The structure of the paper is different. There is an abstract in the IMrad format, unlike a typical argumentative paper. The purpose of and imrad report is to present findings in a format that makes the information understandable. The introduction of an imrad report contains citations to prior research on the topic. There is no methods section in a typical argumentative paper, but in an imrad paper, there is a methods section with several subheadings.
         Another difference is the inclusion of tables and figures. Imrad reports contain tables and figures to make the data more presentable, while in a typical argument essay, these normally do not make an appearance. The conclusion of an argument essay normally summarizes the main points, and an imrad discussion section is similar, however it acknowledges flaws or limitations in the research.
   An Imrad report contains a bulleted list of recommendations, while a typical argument-based paper does not.
